Departments and Clinical Units
A team approach to individualized care for every cardiovascular patient.
Centro Cardiologico Monzino IRCCS is a fundamental reference point for cardiovascular heart care throughout Italy and abroad. Thanks to its elevated specialisation in 6 distinct clinical Departments, a considerable volume of consultations and examinations, in addition to systematic sharing of clinical strategies, the Centre is able to perform 1,400 surgeries and 7,300 invasive procedures each year with an elevated level of success.
The Clinical activity of CCM is patient oriented and based on multidisciplinary projects and activities involving all the cardiovascular Departments in order to provide the best possible experience for the patient, developing innovations in the diagnostic and therapeutic fields.
CCM clinical activity is performed on 6 Departments; Cardiovascular Imaging (diagnostic services), Interventional Cardiology (heaemodinamic), Electrophysiology, Cardiovascular Surgery, Critical Cardiology and Rehabilitation, Urgent and Emergency Care.
Department of Interventional Cardiology
Director: Antonio Bartorelli; MD, PhD, Professor of Cardiology at the Department of Clinical and Community Sciences Department of Cardiovascular Diseases of the University of Milan; Author of many peer reviewed papers in international journals; Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and the American College of Cardiology.
The cardiac catheterization laboratories are equipped with the most advanced tools to offer a full range of state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, from coronary angioplasty to angioplasty and stenting in the arteries of the leg and the kidneys, the carotid arteries and the abdominal vessels, such as the aorta and the iliac arteries.

Department of Arrythmology and Electrophysiology
In this Department almost every type of arrhythmia is managed, mostly with radiofrequency catheter ablation after 3D reconstruction and substrate mapping. Implantation of pacemakers and ICD are also performed. Moreover, the Department is equipped to perform transcatheter closure of the left atrial appendage, and endomyocardial biopsies.

Department of Cardiac and Vascular Surgery
Director: Gianluca Polvani MD, PhD. Professor of Telecardiology First level Master
The Department of Cardiac and Vascular Surgery uses both traditional techniques and the most advanced techniques currently available for the surgical treatment of adult heart diseases, to provide each patient with the technique that best suits their needs.
Surgery activities involve all fields of adult cardiac and vascular surgery, performing a high volume of procedures, from mini-invasive or transcatheter valve implants to coronary bypass surgery, from endovascular or open surgery of aorta aneurysms to carotid arteriectomy and peripheral vascular surgery. Ventricular Assist Devices are also implantated.

Department of Critical Cardiology and Rehabilitation
Director: Piergiuseppe Agostoni; MD, PhD, Professor of Cardiology at the Department of Clinical and Community Sciences Department of Cardiovascular Diseases of the University of Milan; author of over 600 peer reviewed papers, Associate Editor of the International Journal of Cardiology; President of CPX International Inc. (formerly The International Society for Exercise Intolerance Research and Education (ISEIRE).
By using advanced diagnostic tools and innovative therapeutic strategies, the Department aims at assessing and treating heart failure, – most often resulting from acute coronary syndrome or cardiac valves deficit complications, – providing cardiovascular rehabilitation and taking care of patients affected by heart diseases needing a “global” evaluation and drug treatment.

Department of Cardiovascular Imaging
Director: Gianluca Pontone. MD, PhD. Author of over 280 scientific publications, more than 490 abstracts in national and international conferences and 538 lectures, he is currently deputy chairman of the working group of TC and nuclear medicine of SIC (Italian Society of Cardiology). He is a member of the Board of the European Association Cardiovascular Imaging (EACV) and the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT).
This Department includes three main Departement: Echocardiography, Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MRI), exclusively dedicated to cardiovascular imaging. All include the most advanced and innovative imaging techniques such as 3D eco devices, the new cardiac Revolution CT, – wich is able to scan the heart “in a blink of an eye”, and cardiac MRI.
