PNRR Projects

Mission Health is the sixth area of intervention under Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), financed through the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme.

The PNRR has allocated €15.63 billion to the Health Mission—representing 8.16% of the total Plan budget—to support major reforms and investments aimed at strengthening the Italian National Health Service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale, SSN), with implementation scheduled for completion by 2026.

Centro Cardiologico Monzino IRCCS is involved in the investments under Component 2 – Innovation, Research and Digitalization of the National Health Service, which focuses on strengthening scientific research in the field of biomedical research within the SSN. This initiative also leverages the positive outcomes of the reform of the IRCCS system and is aligned with, and complementary to, the research ecosystem programs promoted by the Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) and the technology transfer programs promoted by the Ministry of Economic Development (MISE), including joint initiatives with the Ministry of Health.

Three types of interventions will be funded:

  • Research programs and projects on rare diseases and rare cancers, aimed at strengthening the capacity of Italy’s centers of excellence and developing innovative models that improve the overall quality of patient care.
  • Research projects on chronic non-communicable diseases, which have a major impact on healthcare and social care systems, focusing on risk factors and prevention, as well as disease etiology, pathogenesis, and underlying mechanisms.
  • Proof-of-concept projects, designed to bridge the gap between academic research and industry by supporting the transition from scientific discovery to the development and validation of innovative applications and technologies.

Plan/Mission: PNRR/M6 – National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) / Mission 6: Health

Component: M6C2 – Innovation, Research and Digitalization of the National Health Service

Investment: M6C2 I2.1 – Enhancement and Strengthening of Biomedical Research within the National Health Service (NHS).
