Centro Cardiologico Monzino is a highly specialised research and care institute focusing on the heart and its vessels.
Founded in 1981, it is the first hospital in Europe exclusively dedicated to heart care and accredited with the Italian National Health Service.

In 1992, it became the first IRCCS (Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico) approved by the Italian Ministry of Health with focus on cardiology.
Today, Monzino is part of the IEO Group and it reinvests the whole net profit in Research and Innovation.

It is highly specialised in 6 distinct Departments: Clinical Electrophysiology & Cardiac Pacing Department, Critical and Rehabilitative Cardiology Department, Interventional Cardiology Department, Cardiovascular Surgery Department, Emergency-Urgency Department, Peri-operative Cardiology and Cardiovascular Imaging Department.

All the activities are inspired by values such as specialisation, research, interdisciplinary care and continuity of services, aimed at offering a patient-centred and personalised approach to cardiovascular disease treatment.

Monzino houses the only cardiology Emergency Department in Milan, with 12,200 admissions per year, and also accommodates the Lombardy Region's cardiovascular Tissue Bank.

Cardiovascular Telemedicine makes possible to monitor discharged patients for the best home-based management of post acute cases.

Monzino was set up as the main seat of the University of Milan for the study of Cardiovascular disease: thus it contributes to training, producing clinical excellence in all specific roles, in order to offer the best care.

It is also a centre for postgraduate training: the Monzino Alumni Community, including all professionals who received specific training here, is in fact a network of qualified centres in Italy and abroad.

A total of 12 Research Units, with 77 researchers are active at Centro Cardiologico Monzino, that led to 349 publications in scientific magazines (2,563 Impact Factor) with an excellent scientific productivity rate per researcher, directly integrated with hospital areas to transform results achieved into new approaches for prevention, diagnosis and patient care as quickly as possible.

Constantly improving knowledge of the heart’s “language” and that of its cells, the centre’s laboratories search for new markers that would allow better prevention of cardiovascular disease and prompter, more personalized and effective care.

A further field of research concerns the use of innovative equipment for diagnostic and surgery procedure imaging, to make the detection and treatment, for instance, of coronary disease, more effective and less invasive.
