Department of Electrophysiology & Cardiac Pacing
The Electrophysiology & Cardiac Pacing Department aims to diagnose and treat heart arrhythmias and install cardiac stimulation systems, such as pacemakers and implantable defibrillators. The activity is characterized by the use of sophisticated diagnostic systems and cutting-edge surgical techniques in atrial fibrillation.
The Department of Electrophysiology & Cardiac Pacing is a reference point in this field, as it is particularly at the forefront of "personalized" treatment of atrial fibrillation and the management of more complex arrhythmias.
The research activity of the Department deals with:
- innovative diagnostic systems thanks to electrophysiological mapping of the heart;
- new interventional techniques;
- advanced technologies of cardiac stimulation systems;
- remote arrhythmia monitoring and control systems.
Recently new lines of research have been successfully developed thanks to the use of the latest technologies:
- Electroporation: a method that consists in the application of an electric field that eliminates the circuits responsible for atrial fibrillation, ensuring a high success rate
- Radiotherapy: technique applied in patients with malignant ventricular arrhythmias who do not respond to conventional ablation treatments or for whom no other possible treatment exists
- Cardioneuroablation: new ablative technique applied to the treatment of syncope in young patients that allows to reduce vagal activity avoiding or moving in time a possible implantation of pacemaker
